Digital X-rays – low radiation, clear advantages

Our orthodontic specialist Dr. Yvonne Ewen evaluates various aspects on the x-ray of the jaw. These include the teeth and their roots, the jaw joints, the paranasal sinuses and the general condition of the bone. Dr. Ewen also analyzes how the teeth are positioned in the jaw.

What exactly is digital X-ray?

Digital X-rays are a modern technology in radiological imaging. Instead of taking pictures on film as was previously the case, the images are now taken either on a special storage plate or a sensor and saved as digital data. This method has made it much easier to share the images. Digital images also use up to 90% less radiation because the plate is very sensitive. When sensor technology is used, the images can be read directly into a program and viewed and processed in real time on the computer screen in order to make diagnostic decisions.

How does digital X-ray work?

X-rays are electromagnetic waves that are generated using a tube and directed through a tube at the area of the body to be examined.
The rays have the ability to penetrate the human body.
In the digital process, the radiation hits a storage plate or a sensor behind the part of the body being scanned. The radiation is altered to varying degrees by the different tissues in the body, so that bones appear light and organs and cavities appear darker in the image.

Why is digital X-ray important in orthodontics?

Our orthodontist can use an X-ray to determine whether all permanent teeth, including wisdom teeth, are present in children and adolescents. She also checks how much space is available for the teeth to break through and what stage the tooth roots are at. This information enables our orthodontist to determine the optimal time for orthodontic treatment.

The overview X-ray also provides information about possible difficulties during treatment. We can identify missing, extra or displaced teeth and, especially in the case of repeated treatments, recognize early warning signs of root resorption. We are also able to analyze fillings, crowns, bridges, implants or caries using the X-ray.
