The first visit to heyzahn

When does a first visit to an orthodontist make sense?

Correct tooth and jaw alignment forms the basis for healthy teeth into old age. Healthy growth is necessary for correct tooth eruption, supports good chewing function, clear speech and thus enables the best possible dental hygiene.

That's why we recommend a check-up appointment with Dr. Ewen in Obermenzing from the age of four, but no later than the age of six. The first phase of mixed dentition begins at the age of six. But how do you recognize this phase and why should you take your little one to the orthodontist?

In the first phase of the mixed dentition, the first permanent teeth to break through at the age of six are the 6-year molars, i.e. the first large molars behind the last milk teeth. At around the age of 6 to 7, the change of front teeth also begins, when the lower and upper incisors are replaced by permanent incisors. During this time, early treatment can be useful to control jaw and facial growth.

Once the first phase of tooth change is complete, the so-called resting phase follows. Here, the change of teeth stagnates for 1 to 1.5 years. From the age of nine, the second phase of tooth change continues and the permanent side teeth break through. At this point, it makes absolute sense to see an orthodontist again, as this is a good time to start the main orthodontic treatment. Most orthodontic findings can be treated very well with removable braces by taking advantage of prepubertal growth. The second phase of tooth change is complete when all permanent teeth have broken through, which is usually the case from the age of twelve. At this point, fixed braces can be used to regulate the misaligned teeth.
