Frequently Asked Questions / FAQs

The milk tooth is wobbly - what now?

If a milk tooth falls out, it is first of all crucial to clarify the cause - whether it is a fall, an accident or simply a loose tooth due to the child's age! If the tooth loss is due to an accident, we strongly recommend that you visit our children's dental practice heyzahn immediately with your child. This way we can get a precise picture of the situation and take the necessary steps. In the case of a natural loss of a loose tooth, however, there is no need for you to take any action. The tooth is allowed to fall out on its own.

Why are baby teeth so important?

Milk teeth fulfill various important functions in the mouth. They play a crucial role in food intake, speech development and contribute significantly to the healthy development of the teeth. Since milk teeth are in the mouth until around the age of 13-14 and often only start to wobble late, it is very important to keep them healthy and take good care of them in order to avoid pain.

When should my child go to the dentist for the first time?

We recommend the first visit as soon as the first milk tooth comes through. It is especially important to us to talk to you as parents in detail about topics such as nutrition, proper dental care, the use of fluoride or how to deal with pacifiers or thumb sucking and bottles. Our goal is to support you as best as possible from the start in order to maintain your child's dental health and thus improve the prospect of healthy milk teeth.

Through regular check-ups, we can detect tooth decay early and treat it in a relaxed manner through timely intervention. It is also beneficial for your child to get used to visiting the dentist early on and to be gently introduced to dental treatments. This way, fears are avoided right from the start!

Why should we go to a pediatric dentist?

The treatment of children differs considerably from that of adults, both in terms of general and dental care. A visit to the children's dentist should be just as natural as a visit to the pediatrician. Dental treatment methods must therefore be individually tailored to the specific needs of each child. To ensure that children have a positive experience during treatment, feel comfortable and have fond memories of their visit to the dentist, sensitive handling is required, which often requires a high degree of psychological skill. In addition, the practice equipment plays a crucial role and should meet the needs of the children.

Our team is specially trained to treat children and the most important thing for us is to create a child-friendly treatment atmosphere. With patience and empathy, we strive to build trust and reduce any existing fears or tension. This lays the foundation for a carefree relationship with dental treatment in the future. In our modern and child-friendly practice, patients can play in the waiting room, distract themselves with the TV screens in the room and, most importantly, not feel like they are in a dentist's office! They are distracted, fear cannot arise in the first place and the kids are totally relaxed too!

Brushing teeth - when do we start?

As parents, we often ask ourselves at what age we should start brushing our children's teeth and how best to do this. This question is not easy to answer: brushing a small baby's teeth can be challenging. This is often associated with crying and screaming. However, there are some care tips and specific techniques that can make this task easier. We therefore recommend that you visit us at the heyzahn pediatric dentistry practice so that we can personally instruct you on how to properly care for your child's first teeth.

When does the first tooth come?

Babies usually start teething between the sixth and eighth months of life. The two central incisors in the lower jaw usually appear first, followed by the upper incisors and the lateral teeth. The first molars break through between the 12th and 16th month, and by around two and a half years the milk teeth are complete with a total of 20 teeth.

Babies teethe in very different and individual ways. Parents don't need to worry if it takes a little longer for their child - or if the first tooth comes through earlier. Most children have at least one tooth by their first birthday.

How do I know if my baby is teething?

Teething rarely goes unnoticed! Common accompanying symptoms of teething are restless sleep or a slightly elevated temperature of up to 38 degrees. The infant often shows signs of discomfort by whining, screaming or crying more, as teething is often accompanied by pain. The gums at the eruption site can be red and swollen, accompanied by red cheeks and increased salivation. The cheeks are warm to hot, as there is strong blood flow.

Babies often drool more and put everything, especially their fingers or their entire hand, in their mouths. Due to the constant production of saliva, the mouth area and chin remain moist and this can lead to slight skin irritation or scabs, particularly in cold weather.

How can parents relieve teething pain?

Counter pressure and cooling can provide relief for your child. Offer them something to chew on, preferably a chilled teething ring. The coolness has a soothing effect on swollen and inflamed gums. Place the teething ring in the refrigerator, but not in the freezer, to avoid injuring the gums. A damp, cold washcloth can have a similar cooling effect as a chewing aid and replacement for the teething ring.

To massage the gums, you can apply some chamomile tea and massage it gently with your finger to soothe and reduce the pain. Make sure your baby drinks enough or breastfeed him/her more often.

It is important to provide reassurance and comfort during teething. Be there for your child because they need your attention. Speak soothingly, stroke your baby and pick them up when they cry.
