Diagnosis of temporomandibular joint disorders at heyzahn in Obermenzing
Jaw joint therapy
The jaw joint is a highly complex and sensitive construct in the human body and is one of the most active joints of all.
It can cause a variety of complaints, including pain in the jaw joint or face, restricted mouth opening, cracking noises when chewing, or headaches and muscle pain.
The cause of jaw joint problems is often the misalignment of the skull and lower jaw in relation to each other. The term "cranio" refers to the skull and "mandibular" to the lower jaw, which leads to the term craniomandibular dysfunction. An incorrect jaw position usually leads to asymmetrical jaw joints and can cause problems that should be treated as part of CMD therapy. Problems with the position of the jaw can have far-reaching effects and also lead to pain and complications in other parts of the body. In orthodontics, we work closely with colleagues from other disciplines.
Pain in the head, neck or back
In addition to pain in the joint itself, problems with the jaw joint can quickly lead to tension, which then radiates through the chewing muscle and leads to the typical tension headaches. Further pain can then also occur in the neck or back.
Teeth grinding
Teeth grinding (bruxism) often occurs unconsciously while sleeping and is often associated with increased stress or psychological strain. Grinding not only damages the tooth structure, but also causes tension in the chewing muscles. Tinnitus symptoms can occasionally occur as a result of grinding and clenching. A shortened tongue tie can also be a cause of teeth grinding, in addition to a forced bite. We would be happy to advise you in detail here at heyzahn in Obermenzing.
Cracking and rubbing of the jaw joints
If you hear cracking noises or friction in one or both jaw joints when chewing or yawning and these symptoms occur regularly or continuously, these jaw joint problems should be examined. It may be that the disc, the connective tissue disk between the joint head and socket, has shifted, or there is inflammation or degenerative disease in the jaw joint.
Our functional analysis of the jaw joint includes a careful examination of the structures involved and a thorough medical history to determine the causes of your symptoms. In some cases, an X-ray or MRI scan may also be required to make a diagnosis.
Our multidisciplinary approach ensures comprehensive care through collaboration with dentists, osteopaths, ENT doctors and other specialist disciplines. Our goal is to relieve pain, restore normal function where possible and give you an improved quality of life. A precise diagnosis and individually tailored treatment plans are crucial for the best possible results. Please feel free to arrange a consultation in our practice.
