Children's teeth well protected at heyzahn in Obermenzing
Get healthy teeth with fissure sealing!
The small teeth in your mouth are not just smooth, no, they have bumps and deep grooves. These grooves are often so narrow that it is a real challenge to clean them with a toothbrush. Food particles and bacteria tend to get stuck there and find a comfortable place to stay. Unfortunately, this quickly leads to tooth decay.
But don't worry! The heyzahn team in Obermenzing, Munich, has a solution: a fissure sealant that protects every pit from caries in the long term.
For this to work, the molars must first have completely broken through. It is also important that your child cooperates well. First, we roughly clean the teeth with a special paste and brush. Then we clean them thoroughly with a gel. Under absolutely dry conditions, we apply a thin sealing material that hardens using a special lamp.
Fissure sealing is particularly useful for children and young people with deep fissures, as their teeth are particularly susceptible to caries.
Studies have shown that in adolescents aged 13 to 14, up to 90% of caries is concentrated in the fissures and pits of the molars. These are the teeth that are most at risk during this period.
The effectiveness of fissure sealing has also been proven in many studies. The 4th German Oral Health Study, for example, showed that the spread of fissure sealing between 1997 and 2006 led to a drastic reduction in caries among young people.
Fissure sealing procedure
The fissure sealing treatment itself usually only takes a few minutes and is painless. But of course we carry out an examination beforehand to rule out caries in the fissures.
Investigation phase:
If there is no discoloration, we can seal the deep fissures. If discoloration is already present in the fissure, minimally invasive fillings are necessary. X-rays are often necessary to rule this out.
Cleaning and preparation phase:
Before treatment, we clean the chewing surfaces thoroughly. We use rotating brushes and powder jet devices for this. After cleaning, we dry the affected tooth and treat it with an acid gel. This creates a rough surface to which the sealing material adheres well.
Sealing and fluoridation phase:
We then apply the sealing material and harden it with special lamps. This is followed by a short polishing to remove any residue. And finally, we treat the tooth with fluoride.
Attention parents! Follow-up is crucial
Although a fissure sealant lasts for about 7-10 years, it only offers adequate protection against caries if it is intact. In rare cases, it can happen that some of the fissures wash out. This usually happens in the first 4 to 6 months after treatment. It is therefore important that you come to heyzahn in good time for your first follow-up examination so that we can add to the sealant if necessary. You should arrange further regular check-ups in consultation with your pediatric dentist, Dr. Anna Wechsler.
