Symptomatic tongue tie
The lingual frenulum is a tissue membrane that is located on the underside of the tongue and connects it to the middle of the floor of the mouth. Normally, the tongue should be very mobile; you should be able to stick it out far and place it on the roof of your mouth without any problems. If this is not possible, the lingual frenulum is shortened, so you have a symptomatic lingual frenulum and the tongue function is impaired.

How do you notice a shortened tongue tie?

  • Problems with breastfeeding
  • Problems drinking from the milk bottle
  • Breastfeeding causes pain for the mother
  • Breastfeeding lasts a long time
  • the infant often has flatulence because he swallows a lot of air while breastfeeding
  • the swallowing pattern is impaired: in children or adults, the tongue presses between the rows of teeth
  • Speech articulation disorders: Children cannot pronounce letters/words correctly
  • snoring

Symptomatic lip tie
A symptomatic lip frenulum that is too short often occurs in the upper jaw. If the mobility of the lips is restricted, the lip frenulum is shortened or symptomatic. This is then referred to as the frenulum labii breve and in these cases the frenulum is very strong and thick. A shortened lip frenulum is often inherited.

How do you notice a shortened lip frenulum?

A specialist should examine the lip frenulum to determine whether it is shortened. The following symptoms may indicate this:

  • The infant cannot properly pucker the lips and create a vacuum by taking the breast tissue into the mouth with the mouth wide open
  • Milk runs out of the corners of the mouth, air is sucked in
  • Frequent flatulence occurs due to swallowing air
