Relaxed as an anxious patient at heyzahn in Obermenzing
The potential of behavioral guidance, local anesthesia, nitrous oxide and general anesthesia
Together with the children, we embark on a fascinating journey into a world full of possibilities. Every child has the chance to bring their own, unique fantasies to life.
A visit to our practice is like an exciting adventure or a wonderful dream. We help the children to relax or to go on a journey of discovery with us during treatment. In our practice, teeth are put to sleep with sleeping beads and we paint little pictures on the chewing surfaces that our little patients can choose! We find a way to win the hearts of your children. And we really enjoy it! They feel it and go home with great, new experiences. The children leave us without pain and with a beaming smile on their faces.

Hypnotic behavioral guidance
In pediatric dentistry, behavioral guidance is an essential part of treatment. We use hypnotic behavioral guidance to distract your child and take them into our fantasy world. Your child can relax gently and carefully on the treatment couch and focus on the fish swimming above the couch on the TV. The fish swim in bright colors, your child becomes completely relaxed and forgets the here and now, and we can carry out the treatment well. We talk a lot and distract your child.
We apply this behavioral guidance as standard for every treatment in our pediatric dental practice heyzahn.
With this child-friendly method, we gradually reduce the fear of our young patients during treatment. We use colorful stories to explain the individual treatment steps to your child, thereby diverting attention from the procedure itself. We increase the sense of well-being through physical contact, extensive praise and the use of positive terms. There is also the option of letting your child watch a funny favorite series on the TV on the ceiling during the treatment in order to enter a relaxed trance state. This distracts them from the room environment and naturally reduces the sensation of pain.
What a treatment under hypnotic behavioral guidance means:
- We use funny and imaginative stories and discuss everything in a child-friendly way
- We only use positive phrases such as "You may now..."
- We always stay close to your child to give them a feeling of security
- The child is the boss for us. They decide how long the treatment lasts and what we are allowed to do! In consultation with the parents, of course.
With these techniques we strengthen the building of trust and create positive moments during your visit to the heyzahn children's dental practice in Obermenzing, Munich.

Local anesthesia
Even teeth can relax and even go to sleep - did you know that? A few sleeping pearls are enough for that! We have them in bright colors that our little patients can choose from. The sleeping gel that puts the gums to sleep is available in vanilla or strawberry flavor. And if the sleeping pearls work well, the tooth sleeps really soundly and sometimes even snores a little. At heyzahn we use special cannulas for the injection and can do it painlessly - your child won't feel a thing!
In our heyzahn children’s dental practice in Obermenzing, Munich, all team members are professionally trained in the use of child-friendly local anesthesia

Nitrous oxide
Our goal is to provide our young patients with pain-free treatments, so that your child has a positive experience at the pediatric dentist and is happy to come back for check-ups. To ensure this when minor treatments are needed, we at heyzahn use both hypnotic behavioral guidance and laughing gas treatment.
Inhalational nitrous oxide sedation:
For anxious children or those with a gag reflex, treatment using a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen can be very effective. This simple and gentle method puts the young patients into a euphoric state and reduces the sensation of pain. This means that your child will perceive necessary measures during treatment as harmless and accept them more easily (such as a local anesthetic with injection).
After the treatment is completed, your child will immediately be fit again and can continue his or her normal daily routine.
Is treatment with nitrous oxide suitable for our child?
Nitrous oxide treatment is ideal for children who are afraid of the dentist as well as for small, tense patients. Nitrous oxide treatment is also an ideal solution for children in particular, enabling a relaxed treatment. The advantages of nitrous oxide sedation include the significant reduction or complete elimination of the gag reflex and the reduced sensation of pain.
Treatment procedure with nitrous oxide:
We administer the mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a nasal mask, gradually increasing the proportion of nitrous oxide. This puts your child into a state of relaxation, but they remain conscious at all times. A pleasant feeling of relaxation spreads over time. After the treatment is complete, this state slowly disappears as soon as we increase the oxygen proportion back to 100 percent. Nitrous oxide cannot be used if nasal breathing is impaired or if there is shortness of breath.
Can there be risks associated with nitrous oxide sedation?
Since we at heyzahn only use the most modern medical equipment and are well trained in the use of laughing gas to relax our patients, this form of sedation is a very safe method of calming down during dental treatment. There are currently no known side effects or risks associated with this treatment method. We will explain these to you again during your visit. It is also important to mention again that your child is fully conscious and that all reflexes are preserved. If your child has been diagnosed with a fear of the dentist, our laughing gas treatment is particularly suitable.

general anesthetic
In the case of extensive treatments where pain relief cannot be guaranteed or in the case of very young or anxious children, it is recommended in special cases to carry out the treatment under general anesthesia. For this purpose, we provide a modern operating room with child-friendly equipment and a recovery room.
The experienced anesthetists of the Anesthesia Association in Bavaria (AGiB) administer the anesthesia to your little patient in our practice. In a detailed preliminary discussion, the doctors will explain all the details to you and answer all your questions.
Possible reasons for general anesthesia for dental treatment:
- Milk and permanent teeth are severely damaged
- Chronic inflammation prevents local pain relief
- Your child is too small or does not show willingness to undergo treatment
- Mental or physical impairments preclude pediatric dental treatment under local anesthesia
We work closely with the experienced team of pediatric anesthetists at AGiB, who are there for your child before, during and after the anesthesia treatment.
Preparation for general anesthesia:
Before the treatment, the anesthetist will offer you a detailed consultation and explain the exact procedure. Please follow the anesthetist's instructions so that we can optimally carry out the planned treatment under general anesthesia:
- Please be on time for your appointment in our practice
- Your child must be fasting, he or she must not eat anything for 6 hours before the procedure and must not drink anything for 2 hours before
Procedure of general anesthesia:
To ensure that your child does not remember the start of the general anesthesia and does not develop a fear of the dentist, the anesthetist uses a nose mask to induce anesthesia with anesthetic gas so that our little patient falls asleep after a few minutes. You can stay with your child until this point.
The anesthetist carefully monitors the little patient throughout the treatment. During the treatment, you can wait in the waiting room or go shopping at Edeka or Rossmann across the street. We will tell you exactly how long it will take in advance, so that you can be back in our practice in time for when you wake up.
After general anesthesia:
After waking up, your child can rest in their own recovery room. You can be with your child immediately after the treatment and accompany them until they are fully awake again.
In total, you should plan on spending about 1 to 3 hours in our practice (depending on the length of the treatment). As soon as the little patient feels better and the anesthetist gives his or her approval, you can go home together with your child.
If you arrive by car, an additional accompanying person should sit with your child on the return journey.
