First visit to the dentist - tips to calm your child
We recommend that you make an appointment with us when the first milk teeth come through (from around 6 months). On the day of the visit, you should take a few measures to prevent or reduce your child's fear. Give them a familiar toy or cuddly toy to give them a feeling of security. This can then also be integrated into the check-up! Distraction is also an effective way to reduce anxiety. Tell a funny story during the car ride to the dentist's appointment. In the waiting area, you can play, paint and examine the cuddly toy you brought with you.
It is important that your child comes to the first dentist visit with an open mind.
If you as parents have had negative experiences at the dentist, do not mention this to your child. We will ask for some important information about this in our medical history and will address it during the initial consultation.
The first impression counts - preparation at home
Above all, the first impression your child makes when they meet at the practice plays an important role in their later relationship with the dentist or pediatric dentist. You should therefore present your appointment with the pediatric dentist as something positive and exciting right from the start. Avoid giving too many details about prophylaxis or possible treatments so as not to arouse unnecessary fears or worries. Instead, you can tell them about the toothbrushing school, where even the cuddly toys learn how to clean their teeth properly.
It is important that you prepare your child for the visit and the pediatric dentist in advance. Explain to them in simple terms why it is important to visit the pediatric dentist regularly and that the pediatric dentist will help keep their teeth healthy. You can also read a picture book about visiting the pediatric dentist - we have some in the waiting room - or play role plays to familiarize the child with the situation in the practice in a playful way.
Initial consultation in the practice - procedure of the inspection
At the first check-up, pediatric dentist Dr. Anna Wechsler will first try to gradually gain your child's trust. She takes a lot of time to examine the little patient's teeth in a playful way and to show him some devices and try them out together. By wearing sunglasses to protect him from the bright light, choosing his own toothpaste flavor and even choosing his favorite film on the TV on the ceiling, your child can have a lot of say himself. This keeps his interest aroused.
After the visit to the heyzahn children's dentist
Depending on the child's age, the reward is a small gift or a coin for the coin machine, which gives out a gift. After the first visit to the pediatric dentist Dr. Wechsler is over, you should emphasize the positive. Praise your child for their good behavior during the check-up or teeth cleaning and ask what they liked best. Brushing the little dinosaur, the vanilla polishing paste or examining and counting teeth with the mirror? This way we can respond to it as best as possible next time and get used to your child from appointment to appointment.
The importance of oral hygiene
The first visit to the pediatric dentist is not just for an examination, but also to teach your child the importance of good oral hygiene and prophylaxis. Use the opportunity to explain to your child why regular brushing is important. Practice with your child at home in a playful way how best to brush your teeth and reward them with positive feedback afterwards. You can get tips and tricks on how to get even more motivation to brush your teeth with special apps and electric toothbrushes from us at the heyzahn pediatric dentist practice!
Why a children’s dental practice?
When choosing a pediatric dentist, it is important to choose an expert who specializes in the needs of children. Pediatric dentists like Dr. Wechsler are not only familiar with the special treatment techniques for children (treatment management, hypnosis techniques, playful familiarization with the equipment), but also know how to calm a child and take away their fear. Our cozy and child-friendly waiting room at heyzahn with a play corner and friendly, empathetic employees also help to make your child feel comfortable. If treatment is necessary and calming tactics are not enough for your child, there is of course the option of treating with laughing gas, sedation or general anesthesia. Of course, you as parents can make this decision yourself!
